1 · Chiang Mai — 4 nights
Food, markets, temples, forest and mountain scenery. Rent a car with a confident driver for day trips, or use Grab/songthaews locally.
An 18-day family route for four adventurous adults (20–30) and two active parents (55): jungle, local life and two proper beach pauses—without building the trip around packaged tours.
Chiang Mai → Khao Sok → Koh Yao Noi → Koh Lanta
Recommended window: 10–27 January (or broadly mid-January to early February). Expect warm, mostly dry beach weather around 25–32°C, calmer Andaman seas, and comfortable northern Thailand days. This is before the usual Chiang Mai smoke/burning season and outside the wetter Andaman months.
Trip shape: 4 nights north, 3 nights rainforest, 4 nights quiet island, 5 nights beach/chill island, 1 flexible travel night. This is deliberately a four-base trip: enough variety, but not a frantic checklist.

Ancient rainforest, limestone cliffs and Cheow Lan Lake. Stay in the village plus one lake night if the group is happy with basic accommodation.
Quiet Andaman island life: scooters, bicycles, mangroves, viewpoints and uncrowded beach time. A good reset after the jungle.
Long beaches, sunsets, old town, snorkeling/diving and a slower final stretch. Stay near Long Beach or Klong Nin, not the party strip.
Why January: It is the best compromise for this route: the Andaman coast is normally in its drier, calmer season, and Chiang Mai is generally clearer before smoke haze commonly develops from February through April. Northern mornings can be cool, while the south stays warm. Check live air quality and forecasts close to departure.

Allow generous time for the island-to-airport transfer. If flying internationally from Bangkok, add a night in Bangkok rather than attempting a risky same-day island connection.
Use trains or domestic flights for long jumps, local buses/minivans for regional legs, and Grab or songthaews in cities. For six people, a pre-booked private transfer can be practical without turning the holiday into a tour.
Book the first and last nights, flights and any lake stay. Keep daily activities flexible. Ask guesthouses for a local restaurant recommendation rather than defaulting to review-list hotspots.
A guide is sensible for caves, serious jungle routes, or marine trips; it is not necessary for every temple, beach or viewpoint. A private long-tail or small-group boat is preferable to a large excursion.
