A few stops along the way

How do you find half a string?
  1. Pair the letters. Fit the shorter string into the longer one, keeping their order. Choose the pairing with the least total alphabet distance; use relative position to break ties. Matching letters stay put.
  2. Walk the alphabet. Treat a…z as 0…25. For every pair, calculate round(from + (to − from) × progress). So a → z visits every letter.
  3. Grow or shrink. Spread the unmatched letters evenly across the journey, in their left-to-right order. Each appears or disappears in a single step. The length is always the rounded interpolation of the two lengths.

At 0% you get exactly “from”; at 100% you get exactly “to”. Swap the inputs to walk the same path backwards. There’s no dictionary involved, so the nonsense in the middle is part of the fun.
